JUSTBREE ART HISTORY 2018

Well, 2018 is on its way out, and when I reflect on the year I have, I can’t help but think it’s one of the greatest I’ve ever had, and quite possible the beginning of a great career in art.

this year was the first to show me I can do it. I can rely on art to live and thrive because of all the generous support from collectors. My dream has always been to have enough financial backing to create as much art as I possibly can make. And to eat. The rest of my money goes towards good food haha. Now my looking back and documenting is mostly for me and a journal of sorts. Feel free to read along! 

In the beginning of 2018, I was laying low supplying my galleries in Hawaii!  

I had a regular routine of minor traveling and just surfing and painting everyday. And if I’m being honest I felt a depression up until February. But what came out of my depression was a new-found love of working out consistently, and my new black works. A deep, mysterious ocean of simplicity and evolving in my artwork style. I didn’t start putting out black works for sale till summer time but the dark colors were a new love. 

I put my works into a cafe in Haleiwa called the BeetBox which was super fun for me and lasted till just a couple weeks ago.

Come April, a friend I met via Instagram that also traveled to Sri Lanka after I did my residency there, came to Hawaii! Nina and I collaborated on a show together at the Aloha Supperette in Kailua!what an adventure, and a memory I will always be fond of.

In May, Bobby and I were invited to attend the Greenroom Festival in Japan to showcase my work! It was amazing to meet so many past collectors and experience Tokyo afterwards! It was the start of a great relationship with the Japan Gallery there!

This wonderful surfboard was made in collaboration with our good friend Matty Raynor. This one I kept, and love it so much. Looking back at 2018, this is only of my biggest joys. Painting and glassing surfboards are kinda a hobby, and when I get to make them I love the challenge. For sure still learning tho. 

Already, by now, the year has gone by so fast! A trip to Australia filming the Roxy girl’s came and went, Mermade Market was over, and Japan sadly came to a close.  Now it was time to spend summer in my hometown of San Clemente, Ca where surfboards were created, an art show was competed and this artwork was made. A relationship with a gallery in Laguna was established and its safe to say I had an eventful and hardworking summer!

A love for this work was unconditional and found a hoe with a new collector.

PORTUGAL! Portugal happened with an art residency at the Magic Quiver Surf Lodge and was such a fun trip for Bobby and I. A blog post about that trip coming soon:)

This work created for an art walk at the Four Seasons Oahu and it too found a new home with an amazing collector.

The year ended with a bang for sure. Completing tables and an art show at Raised by The Waves, a new cafe ran by my good friends in Kahuku, Hawaii. This big work can vibe viewed there.  

‘In the last days of December Bobby and I set up a studio space in San Clemente that will be a showroom while I am gone. I am very excited to learn in 2019. To compare which art studio space I prefer: a home study or one where I go into a studio space in the public.  

Goodbye 2018, you were oh so good to me. 2019, I am excited to see what you bring!
